Pull up a chair with Bobby Flay and his all-time favorite person to cook for, his daughter, Sophie, as they share favorite recipes from their family kitchen.
Few things make Bobby Flay happier than cooking for his daughter, Sophie. A news reporter in Los Angeles and co-host of The Flay List on the Food Network, Sophie grew up around Bobby’s restaurants and shares his passion for all things delicious.
In Sundays with Sophie, the Flays invite you to pull up a chair at their family table to learn Bobby’s secrets for delivering delicious, unbeatable meals for any night of the week. Bobby encourages you to cook with the spirit that Sunday brings: meals that include gathering around the table and sharing beautiful, easy-to-create dishes with family and friends, whether it's a weeknight or the end of a tough week. These are the heartfelt dishes Bobby cooks for the people he loves, whether it's Sophie’s favorite deli-style chicken salad that Bobby always keeps stocked in the fridge for her, or an elegant and simple mafaldine with saffron, tomato, and shrimp that Sophie affectionately calls “the shrimp pasta.” And of course, there are plenty of twists on Bobby classics: grilled sweet potatoes drizzled in an herby citrus vinaigrette, cornbread with a Thai chili sauce butter, and crunch burgers with BBQ-style mushrooms. You’ll also learn essential “desert island” techniques that any novice cook should know by heart, like how to “Piccata Anything” with a simple pan sauce of butter, lemon, white wine, and capers (Sophie’s childhood favorite).
With Bobby as your teacher and Sophie as spirited sous-chef, you’ll feel like you’re cooking right alongside the dynamic duo, all while you build a repertoire of classic, adaptable recipes that will make you a better cook.

Celebrity chef Flay (Beat Bobby Flay) returns with an inviting collection of recipes inspired by meals and memories he has shared with his daughter, Sophie, which he in turn hopes will give readers “wonderful moments between you and the people close to you.” From zhuzhed up breakfast staples (brioche French toast with peaches and blueberry maple syrup, cacio e pepe eggs on olive oil toast) and dinner classics (fried chicken thighs seasoned with chile de árbol and served with homemade ranch dressing, red wine–braised short ribs), these recipes are sure to please. Flay peppers in helpful tips that address common cooking blunders (for the paella, he advises to “resist the urge” to stir the rice as it cooks so that a “socarrat,” or crispy crust, can develop), and Sophie shares anecdotes, joking, for instance, that she and her dad probably “hold the world record” for pistachio gelato consumption, giving readers a glimpse at their relationship. Home cooks will appreciate adding these easy-to-prepare, memorable meals to their repertoire as they get ready to set a table for loved ones.

This new offering, inspired by Flay's (Beat Bobby Flay) favorite day of the week to cook for friends and family, highlights no fuss, no muss cooking with an emphasis on flavor. Flay and his daughter Sophie comment on dishes and share family stories with sidebars and feature quotes. That may sound busy, but the layout remains clean, and the photos are bright, appetizing, and informative. Each chapter delivers a feature loaded with tips for success in the kitchen for the beginning cook, along with enough sophistication for the experienced chef. Creative flavors and plenty of Flay-family comfort dishes, including roasts and decadent desserts, are perfect for entertaining, and there are also vegetarian options throughout, providing lighter fare for weeknight affairs. The father-daughter duo recently debuted a new Food Network show; though this book is not a true companion, it will appeal to fans. Not just another celebrity chef cookbook--will find its audience among cooks of all levels looking for simple execution with elegant results. VERDICT The Flays have slayed it with a casual family cookbook that covers the basics for beginners, but it is full of surprises for veteran home chefs.--Sarah Tansley
